Pedro Arezes is, since 2016, the National Director of the MIT Portugal Program (www.mitportugal.org).
Pedro is, since 2013, a Full Professor (Professor Catedrático) on Human Factors Engineering at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, and a visiting fellow at MIT (AgeLab) and Harvard University, both in USA. Since 2013, he is also an invited full Professor at the University of Porto (Engineering Faculty). In 2010/2011, he worked as an invited researcher at TU Delft (Safety Science group), in the Netherlands.
Having a background on Industrial Engineering, he holds a PhD in the same domain from the UMinho, where he also coordinates, since 2003, the Ergonomics & Human Factors research group, being also the Director of Ergonomics Laboratory and member of the Steering Board of several PhD and MSc programs at UMinho.
He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, authored and edited more than 50 Books and book chapters, and authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers published in international conference proceedings.
During his academic career he has been a member and/or PI of more than 30 international and national competitive funded research projects across several domains, with a special emphasis to the domains of Ergonomics and Human Factors, and of Occupational Safety and Hygiene.
He has been collaborating (as a member of the editorial board, guest editor and/or reviewer) with more than 20 recognised international scientific journals.
He has supervised 17 PhD students (theses concluded – see “former PhD students” option in the menu) and more than 70 MSc. theses. He currently supervises 8 PhD students with ongoing projects.
Pedro has been invited, as guest speaker, for more than 120 conferences/seminars, in several countries, such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Peru, Poland, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.
He is a member of several evaluation boards for research proposals and scholarships, including (but not limited to) the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Portuguese Agency for the evaluation of the Higher Education Institutions and Courses (A3ES), and other European and Brazilian institutions.
He is being a member of the organising committee of more than 60 international events, in the area of Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Hygiene, having a special role in the Scientific and Organising Committees of some of the major scientific European events in the domain of Ergonomics, Human Factors and Occupational safety, such as the SHO (in Portugal), the ORP (in Spain and South America), WOS (Europe), and AHFE (USA).
Pedro is also a member of several scientific and professional associations. Since 2004, he is also the Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO) and, since 2010, member of the Executive Committee of the Specialisation on Safety Engineering at the Portuguese Professional Association of Engineers (Ordem dos Engenheiros).
